Wilkinson College of Art, Humanities, and Social Sciences Department Peer Advisors are a valuable academic resource who help students select classes that meet their interests and program requirements; provide information on academic programs, policies, and procedures; and make appropriate referrals to campus resources. They also provide advice based on their experiences as students at CU.

Peer advisors hold drop-in and appointment hours in-person and remotely; they also respond to email requests for information. Under the direction of a faculty supervisor, the student peer advisor will help their peers with 4-year major and minor planning, major and minor-specific requirements, accessing departmental resources including faculty program advisors, student clubs, web resources, etc., and guide students to Academic Advising and campus resources.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to a professional, helpful, welcoming atmosphere and maintain a positive attitude for faculty, staff, students, and visitors of the department.
  • Hold and manage calendar for in-person and virtual appointments and be available during defined drop-in hours.
  • Respond to all email and phone inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Perform basic intake analysis to determine if they can assist the student themselves or should refer the student to the appropriate department, college, or campus-level resource.
  • Calendar, track and keep notes for every student meeting. Meetings should be scheduled for 15-30 minutes per student.
  • Student peer advisors will enter information and keep notes on the official document log sheet to ensure accurate records of advising consults.
  • Explain and guide students on the importance and relevancy of Program Advisors to assist with enrolling in waitlisted classes, major-related questions, incorporating study abroad, and graduating on schedule.
  • Strive constantly to be accurate and honest in all communication.
  • Attend all training sessions and Peer Advisor meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications
  • Professional, dependable, organized, able to multi-task, ability to collaborate.
  • Able to effectively handle confidential and proprietary information.
  • Effectively communicate in a professional, diplomatic, empathetic, and tactful manner using preferred method and level applicable to the job.
  • Proven accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Proficient level of knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Docs, and/or relevant position software programs. Desired Qualifications
  • Current creative writing student familiar with creative writing program and faculty Special Instructions to Applicants Training and Evaluation Upon hire, training will be required for academic program requirements, policies, and procedures, legal requirements ( FERPA ), campus resources, and the scope of the position. Student Peer Advising training will be offered once in the fall and once in the spring. If a Student Peer Advisor does not attend the calendared training, they must wait until the next available training before they can conduct any peer advising. Faculty supervisors will evaluate the performance of the Student Peer Advisor once a semester. Part of this evaluation will be based on the feedback provided by the students on a questionnaire. This questionnaire will provide feedback on the Student Peer Advisor and the program itself, allowing Wilkinson College to continuously improve the program.
