Full job description

Every day, we work together for what matters – bold, swift, and equitable climate action.

ABOUT THE ROLE As a certified B Corporation, our business is our mission. At 3Degrees, we help organizations large and small take action toward a decarbonized, prosperous future by connecting people with renewable energy and carbon offset solutions on a global scale. To support this mission, our Environmental Markets (EM) team drives wholesale value across North America by managing complex market transactions from initial sourcing to final execution.

We are seeking an Originator to join a committed and progressive team where you will bridge the gap between commercial growth and operational excellence. Working closely with our Trade Operations, Contracts, and Portfolio Management teams, you will develop and manage counterparty relationships, navigate contract lifecycles, and build a deep understanding of compliance obligations.

This role reports to the Compliance Carbon & Fuels Senior Portfolio Manager and is open to candidates based within a commutable distance of our office in New York, New York. This process is intentionally structured to accommodate a range of experience levels—from an execution-focused associate looking to advance into a broader commercial path (level 1 Originator) up to an independent, senior producer (level 3 Originator).

Please Note: 3Degrees does not provide sponsorship or work authorization assistance; therefore, pre-existing right-to-work status is a prerequisite to be considered for this position. WHAT YOU’LL DO Depending on the level at which you are hired (Originator I, II, or III), your day-to-day responsibilities will scale from supporting routine commercial tasks under general supervision to independently owning a book of business and direct production targets:

  • Portfolio & Trade Execution: Propose, structure, and execute carbon allowance and clean fuel credit transactions in compliance markets. Experienced hires will manage complex structures (hedges, derivatives, and arbitrage opportunities), while entry-level hires will focus on straightforward spot transactions under closer supervision
  • Risk & Policy Adherence: Define and achieve commercial milestones while working within internal risk guidelines and designated execution authorities
  • Market Analysis & Positioning: Conduct market sizing, policy research, and regulatory analysis to identify new compliance landscapes and tracking opportunities
  • Relationship Sourcing: Actively research, target, and initiate contact with new market participants to expand 3Degrees' counterparty footprint in compliance territories
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Collaborate regularly with Trading, Analysis, Contracts, Trade Operations, and Regulatory teams to achieve portfolio objectives and track evolving environmental policies

ABOUT YOU We are looking for a naturally focused, ambitious self-starter ready to support or lead North American trading and origination efforts. Because we are open to hiring across multiple levels of our job family architecture, we welcome candidates matching either end of the spectrum below:

  • Experience & Industry Foundation:
  • For Entry-Level (Originator 1/2): 0–3 years of professional experience. We highly welcome individuals coming from back-office, operational, or analytical backgrounds who want to transition into a commercial path
  • For Mid/Senior-Level (Originator 3): 3–5+ years of professional experience, including up to 4–5 years of direct experience originating environmental commodities or energy products. You ideally bring an existing network of industry contacts (utilities, developers, compliance buyers)
  • Market Exposure: A foundational or advanced understanding of Clean Fuel / Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) markets and Cap-and-Trade frameworks (e.g., California, WCI, RGGI)
  • Systems & Tools: Proficient in Microsoft Excel. Familiarity with clean fuel registries/compliance databases (such as California's LRT or Canada's CATS) and trading platforms (ICE trading tools) is a strong plus
  • Sourcing & Growth Mindset: An eager "hunter" who thrives on outbound market execution paired with a consultative communication style required to manage complex counterparty dynamics
  • Quantitative Aptitude: Basic quantitative skills, such as exposure to options pricing or basic programming languages, are an advantage but not a deal breaker
  • Adaptability & Teamwork: A resilient, collaborative team player who maintains composure under pressure and amidst volatile market swings
  • Sense of Humor: Highly encouraged! Our team is close-knit and collegial; we use a healthy dose of humor to navigate the ups and downs of volatile markets while remaining deeply committed to supporting one another HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS Within 30 days
  • You will have developed a practical working knowledge of our in-house portfolio management tools (Artemis) and database systems
  • You will map out the baseline fundamentals of our current origination and trading strategies
  • You will establish cross-functional relationships with trade operations, back-office settlements, regulatory, and contract management teams to understand the mechanics of how we execute and deliver trades Within 90 days
  • You will confidently build, format, and organize highly targeted counterparty contact lists based on your independent market sizing and regulatory research
  • You will actively shadow the Senior Portfolio Manager on open trade allocations, gaining a concrete sense of buyer and seller dynamics
  • You will be comfortable managing basic, routine inquiries and logging market observations via platforms like IceChat Within 6 months
  • You will be fully integrated into the day-to-day trade lifecycle, independently coordinating commercial terms for straightforward spot transactions and back-to-back trades with minimal supervision
  • You will maintain active communication with developing networks, tracking policy changes, and raising critical strategic questions to optimize our pipeline Within 1 year
  • You will maintain a robust, independently sourced pipeline of counterparties that actively contributes value to the Compliance Carbon and Fuels portfolio
  • You will progress from standard spot trades toward assisting in the structuring of more complex transactions, such as multi-year hedges or arbitrage plays, demonstrating a strong mastery of compliance market rules and risk limits
  • You will be fully aligned with East Coast market rhythms, utilizing scheduling flexibility to successfully manage major market events or legislative updates when high-volume situations arise
