Performs professional clinical laboratory testing and diagnostic services to support the delivery of quality healthcare within the institution. Ensures the accuracy, reliability, and timely reporting of laboratory results through quality assurance, instrument maintenance, and compliance with accreditation and licensing standards. Provides critical laboratory information to medical staff, assists with laboratory operations and staff training, and supports continuous quality improvement to ensure safe, effective patient care.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Employee will work with adult male inmates of all custody levels – minimum, medium, maximum (death row) and protective custody.
  • Position-Specific Details:

    Appointment Type: PROBATION, or PROMOTION OF A PERMANENT, CLASSIFIED LOUISIANA STATE EMPLOYEE

  • Current permanent status classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted.
  • An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
  • This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Generalist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Specialist license plus one of the following:

A bachelor’s degree in medical technology or clinical laboratory science; OR

A bachelor's degree in a biological, physical, or chemical science plus one year of experience as a medical technologist.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

Perform Clinical Laboratory Testing

  • Conduct routine and specialized laboratory tests, analyze results for accuracy, recognize inconsistencies, and immediately report critical or panic results to physicians and nursing staff.
  • · Maintain Quality Assurance and Laboratory Standards

  • Perform quality control testing, analyze quality control data, document corrective actions, and ensure compliance with accreditation, regulatory, and laboratory quality standards.
  • · Maintain Laboratory Equipment and Operations

  • Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and documentation for laboratory instruments to ensure reliable operation and accurate test results.
  • · Support Laboratory Administration and Staff Development

  • Maintain laboratory records, inventory, workload statistics, and purchasing documentation while providing training and guidance to laboratory personnel on procedures and best practices.
  • · Provide Comprehensive Laboratory Support

  • Collect and process patient specimens, assist with quality improvement activities, maintain a safe and organized work environment, and perform supervisory laboratory functions in the absence of the Medical Laboratory Technologist Supervisor.
