Principal Risk Associate - Enterprise Services Data Management & Advisory (ES DMA)

Capital One is one of the fastest growing organizations in the world today. The growth of the business is being accelerated by leveraging innovative and emerging technologies. We are serious about technology, we dream big, and we execute: Capital One moved our entire enterprise to the public cloud over the course of five years, fully exiting our data centers.

Just as we prioritize driving innovation through technology, we equally prioritize cybersecurity and managing technology risk.

Technology and Data Risk Management (TDRM) consists of trusted expert advisers who shape decisions, challenge activities to ensure they meet our standards, and oversee technology, data, and information security risk across the business. As part of this organization, the Enterprise Data Risk Management (EDRM) division ensures that our data risk-taking activities are transparent, well-managed, and aligned with enterprise standards.

We raise the bar for excellence, operating with both autonomy and empowerment from senior leadership to safeguard the enterprise.

As a Principal Risk Associate within the EDRM Enterprise Services Data Management Advisory (ES DMA) team, you will play a pivotal role in delivering horizontal project management support. In this role, you will lead critical workstreams to ensure risk initiatives, process enhancements, and data programs are executed successfully.

You will collaborate closely with partners inside the ES DMA team and across adjacent teams in EDRM to drive strategic risk reduction.

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated risk professional who possesses a strong foundation in project management, thrives in dynamic environments, and exhibits the strategic context needed to manage complex dependencies with minimal guidance.

  • Horizontal Project Leadership : Manage and execute strategic project plans for the ES DMA team, ensuring key deliverables, timelines, and milestones align with division priorities.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration : Partner across the ES DMA team and adjacent EDRM teams to align objectives, streamline communication, and coordinate division-wide risk mitigation efforts.
  • Risk Tracking & Issue Resolution : Actively identify, track, and remediate risk events, process gaps, and dependencies within project workstreams to ensure a well-managed environment.
  • Consulting & Stakeholder Engagement : Consult with internal partners to provide project management expertise, translate complex requirements into actionable steps, and coordinate corrective actions.
  • Metrics & Reporting : Design and deliver project status updates, risk metrics, and performance dashboards to provide leadership with clear visibility into workstream health.
  • Process Standardization : Identify opportunities to improve, simplify, and standardize project management and risk event governance methodologies within the team.

To perform successfully at this level, candidates must demonstrate behaviors aligned to our team guidelines:

  • Strategic Context & Problem Solving : Understands the business priorities of the division. Applies these principles to problem-solving and assists in developing practical solutions to mitigate future issues.
  • Execution & Ownership : Demonstrates strong ownership of workstreams. Consistently delivers polished, error-free deliverables ahead of schedule to allow for collaborative refinement.
  • Influence & Communication : Leads important elements of a project workstream. Formulates clear arguments, modulates tone for different audiences, and builds consensus across multiple teams.
  • Discovery in Ambiguity : Navigates undefined project parameters and uses resourcefulness to synthesize data and establish structure.
  • At least 1 year of Financial Services Risk Management Experience
  • At least 3 years of experience supporting, partnering and interacting with internal business clients
  • 3+ years of Project Management experience leading cross functional projects and programs in Risk
  • PMP Certification or Masters Certificate of Project Management (CPM)
