Experience: 8+ years
Future is building a personalized guidance system for lifelong health. We help people understand what to do next for their body, goals, and stage of life - then support them in turning those decisions into sustained behavior change. By combining AI, human expertise, personal health data, and accountability, Future helps members improve performance today while building the resilience, capacity, and healthspan they need for decades to come.
We're hiring a Lead Android Engineer to set the technical direction for Future's Android products and build the experiences our members use every day.
You'll lead work across our phone and Wear OS apps. You'll shape core journeys such as onboarding, coach messaging, scheduling, guided workouts, progress tracking, health-data integration, and video calls. You'll work with product, design, backend, and iOS engineers on a small, senior team.
This is a hands-on role. You'll move between product details and system architecture, write production code, guide technical decisions, and help other engineers do their best work.
- Member Experience: Lead Android implementation for the experiences that connect members with their coaches and help them follow through on their plans. Build polished, accessible interfaces with Jetpack Compose and Future's design system.
- Android Architecture: Set direction for a multi-module Kotlin codebase built around Compose, coroutines and flows, dependency injection, and unidirectional state. Improve module boundaries, data ownership, navigation, and offline behavior as the product grows.
- Connected Health and Wearables: Guide the systems that connect Future with Wear OS, Health Connect, heart-rate data, sensors, and the Android device lifecycle. Protect member data and design for intermittent connectivity.
- Reliability and Performance: Own app startup, responsiveness, media playback, foreground services, background work, real-time calls, and data synchronization. Use crash, performance, and release telemetry to find problems before members encounter them.
- Engineering Excellence: Set expectations for code quality, testing, observability, and maintainability. Strengthen unit, integration, UI, and end-to-end coverage with JUnit, Robolectric, Espresso, and Appium.
- Delivery and Release Quality: Improve Gradle builds, GitHub Actions, Fastlane automation, and Google Play delivery. Help the team ship often without trading away stability.
- Team Leadership: Lead the Android team through technical planning, project execution, design discussions, pairing, and code review. Keep engineers aligned on priorities, decisions, and delivery risks.
- AI-Assisted Development: Use coding agents and AI tools to speed up exploration, implementation, testing, and review. Apply engineering judgment to validate their output before it reaches members.
- You have 8+ years of professional Android engineering experience, including ownership of complex consumer applications.
- You have deep Kotlin knowledge and a strong command of Jetpack Compose, coroutines, Flows, dependency injection, and Android lifecycle behavior.
- You have led architecture work in a large or modular Android codebase.
- You have shipped and supported applications through Google Play.
- You understand performance, offline state, background execution, media playback, permissions, and device fragmentation.
- You have strong testing habits across unit, integration, UI, and end-to-end layers.
- You can debug across UI, networking, persistence, services, devices, and CI.
- You have led complex projects from planning through launch, partnering with product and design while managing scope, dependencies, risks, and delivery.
- You use AI coding tools in your development workflow and know how to verify their output.
You care about health, fitness, and the role that thoughtful coaching can play in someone's life.
- You care about interaction quality, accessibility, performance, and the small details members notice.
- You make architectural decisions based on product needs and operating constraints.
- You share context, invite feedback, and help other engineers grow.
- You take ownership from product discovery through production support.
- Experience building Wear OS applications or working with the Wearable Data Layer.
- Experience with Health Connect, health sensors, or Bluetooth devices.
- Familiarity with HIPAA and other laws and regulations that apply to health products and services.
- Experience with Media3, CameraX, foreground services, or real-time audio and video.
- Experience designing offline-capable applications with Room, WorkManager, and background synchronization.
- Experience with fitness, health, coaching, or other personalized consumer products.
- Experience evolving a design system across a large Compose application.
- Salary range: $190,000-$230,000 / year + equity. The salary range is set based on multiple considerations including business needs, market demands, talent availability, experience, and unique skills and attributes. The base pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
- Health coverage: All employees have access to comprehensive medical, vision, dental, and disability insurance + tax savings accounts
- Health, Wellness & Development: Health and fitness monthly stipend contributes to our employees' overall wellbeing, with access to a mental health platform, reimbursement for medical travel, and an annual learning & development stipend.
- Remote First: Employment eligible to employees located anywhere in the continental US. No travel required.
- Join a diverse, passionate & driven team of all backgrounds.
